Free Comic Book Day takes place annually on the first Saturday of May as a promotional effort by the North American comic book industry to help bring new readers into independent comic book stores. The event started in 2002, offering just 4 books from the four biggest publishers, and has grown to include dozens of offerings each year from various publishers. The first Saturday in May typically coincides with the release of a major comic book movie in theaters. Comic stores can obtain the specially produced promotional comic books for very low nominal fees to distribute to customers for free. The content of the comic books runs the gamut of original material to whole or partial reprints of recent issues to primarily text-based articles (such as those from Overstreet and Wizard).
