AMERICAN GOTHIC is a famous American painting by Grant Wood created in 1930 depicting a farmer holding a pitchfork next to his wife (or daughter) in front of their house. The image is evocative of 19th century American and is one of the most recognizable images of 20th century American art. It has been the subject of broad parody and homage in print, on Broadway and in television and movies.
