The WATCHMEN [1986] comic book series from Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons was a ground-breaking, genre-defining maxi-series generally regarded as having deconstructed and satirized the superhero concept for the modern era. The work is critically-acclaimed and universally tops 'best of' lists--not only for graphic novels, but also some lists of plain, old novels themselves. Zack Snyder faithfully adapted the series to film in 2009. Standing alone for decades, a series of prequel mini-series were published in 2012, and a sequel comic book maxi-series was published in 2018. HBO developed a new television adaptation for late 2019.
