Doctor Who is a British science fiction television series which began in 1963 and still runs today, having had a relatively short (approximately decade-long) hiatus from 1989 to 2005 (separating what can be called its Classic and Revived Eras). The series revolves around its main character, the 'Doctor,' an alien who appears human but is actually a member of the 'Time Lord' species from the planet Gallifrey. Gallifreyans are called Time Lords due to their mastery of time travel technology and their ability to think non-linearly. The Doctor travels in a time machine called the TARDIS, which appears as a 1960's era British blue police box and quixotically has an interior which is vastly larger than that which the size of the box would indicate. The Doctor frequently travels with a human (or human-looking) companion (or companions) interceding in galactic crises on the behalf of different civilizations--including Earth. Companions--whom the Doctor refers to just as his 'friends'--are thought to give the Doctor perspectives and grounding that his powers might not otherwise afford him. And probably the most fantastic feature of a Time Lord's lifespan is they can regenerate in a new body when it get damaged beyond repair. This feature has allowed different actors to portray the Doctor over time, and, as of 2018, the current Doctor is the thirteenth Doctor. The numbering of the Doctor's incarnations is only applied outside the show, as the character only ever refers to him/herself as the 'Doctor' (except for the War Doctor incarnation who has no number applied). U.S. audiences were introduced en mass to Doctor Who in 1978 where the first four seasons of Tom Baker's run (fourth Doctor) aired on Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) stations and it achieved a cult status. Stories can be classified by which 'number' Doctor they contain, but there is no overarching chronology to the myriad of stories. And while inconsistencies abound throughout the franchise, there has never been an insistence on figuring out what is/is not 'canon,' as is typical with the other large science fiction franchises.
Doctor Who is a significant icon in British pop-culture and has had a major impact on generations of British creators in all forms of media. Doctor Who is a major franchise, having expanded beyond its television roots into books, comic books, web comics, films, audio dramas, spin-off television series, video games and all manner of merchandise. The Doctor Who Magazine (DWM)--which regularly features Doctor Who comic strips--currently holds the Guinness World Record as the longest-running television tie-in magazine. DWM began life as DOCTOR WHO WEEKLY in 1979. However, Doctor Who's run in comics began years before the DWM and only shortly after the original television series appeared in 1963. The British weekly comic book, TV COMIC [1950], began publishing Doctor Who comic strips in 1964 with its issue #674 and included Doctor Who in its publications nearly continuously through 1979. The license passed from Polystyle Publications to Marvel UK in 1979 who debuted the DOCTOR WHO WEEKLY [1979-MAG] magazine. US audiences would be treated to just a few reprints of Marvel UK material in the US comic format during their tenure. Marvel UK went defunct in 1995, but the magazine itself continues even today under subsequent publishers. Doctor Who comic material has primarily been issued in comic strip form. In 2007, the US publisher IDW gained the US license to produce original Doctor Who comics in the modern comic book format, which they did until Titan won that license in 2014. Titan publishes US comic series featuring several Doctors, including the latest--the thirteenth. Panini began publishing compilations of the old British strips in 2004 and continues with that endeavor today alongside the original material from Titan.
Given there is no expectancy of chronology or canonicity and there are multiple Doctors, there is no shortage of places to get started with Doctor Who comics. A new fan could literally pick up anywhere without being lost for too long--if at all. Or someone who maybe has a favorite Doctor from another medium could track down comic stories featuring that particular Doctor.
The first appearance of a character in comic book form is often the most valuable issue featuring that character. It's a nice place to get started in Doctor Who, if it's within your budget. The very first Doctor Who comic strip appeared in the British weekly comic, TV COMIC [1951] #674. It was Part 1 of 10, and TV COMIC would publish Doctor Who comic strips from 1964-1979 (with a brief hiatus 1971-1973 when Doctor Who comics would appear in a sister publication). Of note, as well, are the first appearances of Doctor Who in US comics--both the film version (Dell Comics) and the television version (Marvel Comics). See the Key Issues section of this guide for first appearances in comics for each incarnation of the Doctor.
The original presentation of an origin story or a retelling/recounting of it can be a good place to get started with a character or subject. The 'origin' of a superhero is typically the event or circumstances surrounding how they gained their powers and/or began fighting crime. However, Doctor Who does not have a stereotypical superhero origin, and only bits and pieces of his early life have been sporadically presented over his long, long television and publishing history. There is nowhere to go to get a concise summary of the Doctor's early life, and the mystery of that is part of the franchise's charm. Also, since the Doctor can regenerate in a new body, each regeneration becomes a soft relaunch of the franchise with new companions and adventures but with definite connections to past adventures. Non-linear thinking is a key facet of Doctor Who--and of enjoying Doctor Who.
Series beginnings are always great places to get started in comic books. Here is the Main Publication History for Doctor Who comic books. Doctor Who's comic origin and roots are firmly rooted in British comic strips, and comic strips in the UK market were pretty much only way to consume Doctor Who comic material until 2006, when IDW began publishing US comic books in line with the US comic book standard. All of the sparse Marvel (US) comics printed before 2006 were reprints of British comic strips, but IDW launched three strong lines of comic books: original stories of the current Doctor, original stories of former Doctors, and reprints of classic comic strips. Titan has continued publishing original material in the standard comic book format as well for current and former Doctors, but the extremely long-running DOCTOR WHO MAGAZINE still publishes original Doctor Who comic strips. And there is now a healthy line of softcover compilations of British comic strip material, stretchin very far back even. See the Secondary Publishing History for the list of Panini's comic strip graphic novel compilations.

If you've already enjoyed some of the series listed in the Main Publication History above, series from this secondary publication list are very good places to further your exploration. Here, we use the Secondary Publication History to list the many Doctor Who graphic novels, where we strictly limit the entries by the traditional definition of the term 'graphic novel,' which is a magazine-proportioned softcover with a square binding. Panini publishing began a long-running series of graphic novel reprints in 2004, and most of these continue to be in print today. They are not numbered, but we add parenthetical volume numbers below based on their order of publication (which in no way corresponds to the order of publication of the source material).
This section contains a curated list of some of the best storylines for Doctor Who, any one of which can be a good place to get started. Panini is doing such an excellent job of compiling and reprinting some of the best Doctor Who Magazine strips from the Marvel UK era (plus individual issues of Doctor Who Magazine are sometime difficult to collect), we include several of these volumes in the list below instead of the myriad of individual issues of the Doctor Who Magazine which contained the original material. Check the vast Compilations section of this guide, as many of these stories are still in print as compilations. Of note, Alan Moore wrote five backup strips at the very beginning of the 1980's, and Grant Morrison wrote three main strips in the 1986-1988 timeframe.
1980 | DOCTOR WHO WEEKLY [1979-MAG] #35-38, 40-43 (BLACK LEGACY / BUSINESS AS USUAL; two of Alan Moore/Dave Lloyd's five backup strip collaborations (this is the creative duo who would go on to create the non-Doctor Who, critically-acclaimed V FOR VENDETTA series); reprinted in DOCTOR WHO [1984] #14-15) |
1980 | DOCTOR WHO MONTHLY [1980-MAG] #47, 51, 57 (STAR DEATH / 4-D WAR / BLACK SUN RISING; the other three of Alan Moore/Dave Lloyd's five backup strip collaborations) |
1982 | DOCTOR WHO MONTHLY [1980-MAG] #61-67 (THE TIDES OF TIME; from Steve Parkhouse/Dave Gibbons the first real comic strip epic starring the Fifth Doctor is still referenced today; reprinted in DOCTOR WHO [1984] #15-18) |
2004 | DOCTOR WHO: THE IRON LEGION [2004-GN] [VOL 01] (an astonishing adventure set in a parallel universe kicks off Marvel UK's very strong fourth Doctor run) |
2004 | DOCTOR WHO: DRAGON'S CLAW [2004-GN] [VOL 02] (more fourth Doctor) |
2005 | DOCTOR WHO: ENDGAME [2005-GN] [VOL 04] (start of a very strong and long, fan-favorite eighth Doctor comic strip run) |
2006 | DOCTOR WHO: THE GLORIOUS DEAD [2006-GN] [VOL 05] (more eighth Doctor) |
2006 | DOCTOR WHO: OBLIVION [2006-GN] [VOL 06] (more eighth Doctor) |
2007 | DOCTOR WHO: THE FLOOD [2007-GN] [VOL 07] (more eighth Doctor) |
2007 | DOCTOR WHO: VOYAGER [2007-GN] [VOL 08] (sixth Doctor) |
2008 | DOCTOR WHO: THE WORLD SHAPERS [2008-GN] [VOL 09] (sixth Doctor; contains two of Grant Morrison's three Doctor Who stories) |
2008 | DOCTOR WHO: THE FORGOTTEN [2008] #1-6 (1st sanctioned story to include all incarnations of the Doctor to-date (as of then); notable for the inclusion of many historical Doctor Who references) |
2013 | DOCTOR WHO: PRISONERS OF TIME [2013] #1-12 (another amazing all-Doctor epic) |
2014 | DOCTOR WHO: THE TENTH DOCTOR [2014] #1-3 (REVOLUTIONS OF TERROR; first arc of strong start to Titan's tenure) |
2014 | DOCTOR WHO: THE ELEVENTH DOCTOR [2014] #1-15 (Titan's other strong start on the eleventh Doctor) |
2015 | DOCTOR WHO: THE TENTH DOCTOR [2014] #6-9 (THE WEEPING ANGELS OF MONS; an old enemy makes a major appearance) |
2016 | DOCTOR WHO: THE FOURTH DOCTOR [2016] #1-5 (GAZE OF THE MEDUSA; Tom Baker is arguably the most famous Doctor, and this untold tale of the fourth Doctor is a perfect mix of a classic feel with a modern take) |
A key issue can be an acceptable place to get started with Doctor Who, but they are more of a collector's checklist, as they can carry high price tags. As there are limited issues from the Classic Era in US comic book format, all of Marvel's reprint comic books are fairly sought after in the secondary market: MARVEL PREMIERE [1972] #57-60, DOCTOR WHO [1984] #1-23, and DOCTOR WHO: CLASSIC COMICS [1992] #1-27.

In modern comic publishing, it's common (and expected) for individual comic book issues to be collected into compilations of trade paperbacks and/or hardcovers, as well as other special compilations. Unlike the individual source issues, the collected editions typically stay in print for long periods and are less 'collectible.' If individual issues are out of reach or are not of interest to you or if you just need reading copies, the following collected editions of Doctor Who comic books are the most recent in-print editions and are the perfect alternative to get started right away with Doctor Who. The following compilations are presented in a suggested reading order with softcover editions before any hardcover editions.
There is a truly staggering number of Doctor Who compilations in print. Seriously. There's a ton. The list below is first organized by Doctor, then chronologically by publishing order within each Doctor. Stories with multiple Doctors are interspersed chronologically with the lowest number Doctor to appear in the multi-Doctor story or compilation. (Please note, however, the primary market supply on some of these volumes is getting thin, especially Titan's reprints of the IDW stuff.) Check the Key Storylines section of this guide to help you find a great place to get started in this massive library. Or you could just use the list below as a suggested reading order and block off the next year of your life for reading Doctor Who comics (best year ever).

If you've enjoyed non-comic media for Doctor Who, this section describes the comic book source material for some of the most popular non-comic media. But, with Doctor Who, movies and other media are not produced from comic source material. Comic strip and comic book material are spin-offs of the television show and exist alongside the other live-action and text-based media.
