Old Man Logan is an alternate future version of one of Marvel's most popular characters--Wolverine. He is a broken man from an alternate, post-apocalyptic, future Earth where the supervillains exterminated the superheroes--in part, by tricking Wolverine himself. When the Marvel Multiverse was destroyed and recreated during Marvel's 2015 publishing-wide, major event, SECRET WARS, Old Man Logan found himself in the domain of the Wastelands on Battleworld. At the end of SECRET WARS, Old Man Logan woke up in the mainstream Marvel Universe determined to prevent his dark future from happening. Old Man Logan experienced a surge in popularity due to his influence on the cinematic version of Wolverine in the 2017 movie, LOGAN.

Compilations

In modern comic publishing, it's common (and expected) for individual comic book issues to be collected into compilations of trade paperbacks and/or hardcovers, as well as other special compilations. Unlike the individual source issues, the collected editions typically stay in print for long periods and are less 'collectible.' If individual issues are out of reach or are not of interest to you or if you just need reading copies, the following collected editions of Old Man Logan comic books are the most recent in-print editions and are the perfect alternative to get started right away with Old Man Logan. The following compilations are presented in a chronologically-based suggested reading order with softcover editions before any hardcover editions (unless the only in-print editions are hardcover--these are integrated into the softcover list).

1st Appearance

The first appearance of a character in comic book form is often the most valuable issue featuring that character. It's a nice place to get started in Old Man Logan, if it's within your budget. Old Man Logan's first appearance is not a simple issue and is open to some interpretation. Mark Millar introduced two seemingly disconnected characters in two different comic books, both published in June 2008 (with cover dates of Aug 2008) on either the same day or just a week apart. Old Man Logan appeared in WOLVERINE [2003] #66, and the Hooded Man appeared in FANTASTIC FOUR [2003] #558. Both of these characters are future versions of Wolverine. Old Man Logan is from 50 years in the future (as of 2008), while The Hooded Man is from even further in the future. The connection that these two characters were the same character from their respective time periods was not formally introduced until the FANTASTIC FORCE [2009] series (by writer Joe Ahearne with cover dates Jun through Sep of 2009) telling further adventures of The Hooded Man. (Although, you can tell Millar must have done some pre-planning, as The Hooded Man is teamed with Robert Bruce Banner, Jr., and the OLD MAN LOGAN storyline from WOLVERINE [2003] explains how they end up together.) The connection was not solidified until the SECRET WARS: OFFICIAL GUIDE TO THE MARVEL MULTIVERSE [2015] was published in 2015. Of the two characters, Old Man Logan from WOLVERINE [2003] #66 in the nearer of the two futures visually appears to be the character that woke up in the Wastelands on Battleworld. The Wastelands was a domain on Battleworld from the the SECRET WARS major event storyline that completely restructured the Marvel Multiverse and that placed Old Man Logan in the mainstream Marvel Universe at that storyline's end. This character is driven to prevent the fall of the heroes that created the dark future from which he came. A case could be made that SECRET WARS preempted The Hooded Man's further future when the Multivese was put back together, but the SECRET WARS: OFFICIAL GUIDE TO THE MARVEL MULTIVERSE [2015] will always be out there, 'officially' connecting the two characters. Additionally, the Old Man Logan that was placed on Battleworld is technically a new and slightly different version from the one depicted in WOLVERINE [2003] #66-72. As with any issue involving alternate futures, multiverses, and retroactive continuity (retcon) changes, controversy is rife. Fan's will continue to have their own strong opinions, and the back issue market may be the only definitive souce of the relative importance between these two comic books. But, this too may change over time. In recognition of this, the first appearances of both Old Man Logan and The Hooded Man are listed in the table below.

  • WOLVERINE [2003] #66  (1st appearance of a character referred to as Old Man Logan (published Jun 11, 2008))
  • FANTASTIC FOUR [2003] #558  (1st appearance of a character referred to as The Hooded Man (published Jun 11, 2008))

Origin Story

The original presentation of an origin story or a retelling/recounting of it can be a good place to get started with a character or subject. Since Old Man Logan is an alternate future version of Wolverine, this section presents the origin story establishing the future version, not the origin of Wolverine himself in the past. In the previous section, the intricacies of Old Man Logan's first appearance were discussed. Here, as well, two establishing origin stories are presented, one for Old Man Logan of the near future and one for The Hooded Man of the far future. These two characters were connected in the SECRET WARS: OFFICIAL GUIDE TO THE MARVEL MULTIVERSE [2015].

  • WOLVERINE [2003] #66-72   (origin story of The Old Man Logan character, 50 years in the future)
  • FANTASTIC FOUR [2003] #558-562   (origin story of The Hooded Man character, more than 50 years in the future)
  • SECRET WARS: OFFICIAL GUIDE TO THE MARVEL MULTIVERSE [2015] #1   (character profiles in text)

Media source material cover for OLD MAN LOGAN

The Wolverine character in the 2017 movie, LOGAN, is not precisely the comic book character, Old Man Logan, but the movie character is certainly influenced by the comic book character from the modern day classic OLD MAN LOGAN storyline in WOLVERINE [2003] #66-72 and WOLVERINE: OLD MAN LOGAN GIANT-SIZE [2009] #1. Both are future tales: the movie is set about 13 years in the future, whereas the comic book is set further in the future. Both are post-superhero worlds: the movie depicts a world where new mutants have stopped appearing, whereas the comic book world is a post-apocalyptic one where the supervillains have defeated all the superheroes. Both involve a road trip: the movie charges Logan with delivering his clone daughter, Laura (X-23), to safety, while the package to be delivered in the comic book is a briefcase full of super-soldier serum. Both also involve an embittered man, but the guilt of past deeds for comic book Old Man Logan is far greater than the guilt that movie Logan bears. An aged and sick Wolverine with a broken and tortured soul is the major influence comic book Old Man Logan brings to the tone of the movie. While the setting and the circumstances are slightly different, fans are used to shifts in movie adaptations. The resemblance in persona alone is enough to demonstrate the influence the comic book character has made on the cinematic version of Wolverine.
