First Impression: STAR WARS: THE CLASSIC NEWSPAPER COMICS, VOL. 1

by Glenn Snow | December 16th, 2016

The classic newspaper comics by Russ Manning. It can never be overstated how we–who were young when Star Wars first came out–were so starved for anything and everything Star Wars at that time. These newspaper strips filled a bottomless need that persists to this day. They were frivolous tales that led nowhere, except in circles within our own blissful imaginations. It’s not the first time they’ve been collected, but it looks to be the classiest. Buy this. “The first of three volumes that present, for the first time ever, the classic Star Wars newspaper strip from 1979-1984 in its complete format – including each Sunday title header and ‘bonus’ panels in their meticulously restored original color. Initially the color Sundays […]

First Impression: DARTH MAUL #1 (OF 5)

by Glenn Snow | December 16th, 2016

Marvel’s Star Wars line gets even stronger with the addition of Maul! I wasn’t sure they could do anything better than an ongoing Darth Vader title, but the announcement of a Doctor Aphra series was a real treat. Now…Maul. So cool. Can’t wait. Very excited to see this and whatever else Marvel can contribute to the new canon. “Bred on hate, fear, and anger…steeped in the ways of darkness…and trained to kill. Darth Maul’s time as apprentice to Darth Sidious has long been cloaked in shadows, but at last we will reveal his tale of revenge. From writer Cullen Bunn (DEADPOOL KILLS THE MARVEL UNIVERSE, WOLVERINE) and artist Luke Ross (STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS, HERCULES) comes a tale of […]

First Impression: THE WILD STORM #1

by Glenn Snow | December 15th, 2016

Ah, yeah, this is noteworthy. And will be good…guaranteed. Warren Ellis is curating a reboot of the WildStorm Universe. Covert power structures and secret space programs? Ah, yeah…guaranteed good. This could be as momentous as Marvel’s Ultimate Universe, which has had some incredible staying power. “A troubled woman, barred by her employer from continuing her research, walks miserably through New York City. It takes her a moment to notice that everybody else is looking up. A man has been thrown from the upper floor of the Halo skyscraper.  And that woman–Angela Spica, sick from the transhuman implants she’s buried in her own body–is the only person who can save him.  What she doesn’t know is that the act of saving that […]

First Impression: HIGHLANDER: THE AMERICAN DREAM #1

by Glenn Snow | December 15th, 2016

Now this is exciting. Big fan of the cult classic film. Yes, it’s that Highlander! Connor MacLeod of the clan MacLeod in adventures pre-dating the original 1986 Gathering. They should roll right through a remake of the 1986 movie and change the ending, so we can get non-absurd sequels too. Just sayin’. “The cult-classic franchise makes its triumphant return! In the thirty years since its release, Highlander has inspired a cult following and numerous spinoffs with its epic clashes between powerful immortals. Now, The American Dream follows Scottish swordsman Connor MacLeod as he navigates through the American Civil War and 1950s Manhattan toward The Gathering in 1986. Reunite with familiar faces, such as Connor’s secretary Rachel, and meet new immortals, […]
