First Impression: BRUTE FORCE [2018-TPB]

by Glenn Snow | May 13th, 2018

Marvel arrived way late to the 80’s Funny Animal trend. While the Brute Force animals are a mild stretch for inclusion, this compilation also contains POWER PACHYDERMS [1989] #1 which can be tacitly considered one of Marvel’s limited entries to the genre. Enjoy! “Includes fun-packed wildlife fact sheets created by Disney’s Animals, Science and Environment. Wreckless the bear. Soar the eagle. Surfstreak the dolphin. Hip Hop the kangaroo. And Lionheart the – you guessed it – lion. They’re the cybernetically enhanced protectors of the environment, Brute Force. And they’re fighting to save the Earth, whether you asked them to or not. But to claw their way to victory, Brute Force will have to battle their beastly rivals, Heavy Metal – […]

MALL [2018] #1

This is a pretty interesting-looking new series from Scout Comics. It’s like Archie meets the Sopranos in the 80’s. “Fresh from Free Comic Book Day, The Mall is set in everyone’s favorite decade, the 1980’s. This coming of age crime story takes place in a small Florida town at the height of the popularity of indoor malls. When the head of the Cardini Mob Family mysteriously dies, his three illegitimate children each inherit a store in the mall. While the stores front as legal businesses, the real money is in the illegal businesses. The kids are thrust into a world of crime, all the while just trying to survive normal high school life. It’s like a John Hughes Godfather movie. […]

First Impression: DARTH VADER ANNUAL [2016] #2

by Glenn Snow | May 13th, 2018

This annual continues the numbering from the single annual issue that was associated with the first DARTH VADER series, not the currently running second DARTH VADER series. The storyline descriptions seems to match up better with the previous era than the current one, so that would make sense. Interesting, for sure. “DARTH VADER intends for the Empire to hold no secrets for him – or from him. Which means it is time to dig into the pet project of GOVERNOR WILHUFF TARKIN and ORSON KRENNIC: the massive battle station being built on GEONOSIS. Opportunity arises when the project is hindered by sabotage from unknown forces. THE EMPEROR calls on his dark enforcer to root out the source of treachery that […]

But in the aftermath of Hydra’s takeover of the nation, Captain America is a figure of controversy, carrying a tarnished shield…and a new enemy is rising. Who are the Power Elite? And how do they intend to co-opt and corrupt the symbol that is Captain America? Rated T+” Buy It Now Related shopping tags: ALEX ROSS (CA), CAPTAIN AMERICA, CAPTAIN AMERICA (STEVE ROGERS)

CATWOMAN [2018] #1

The Bat-bride gets another self-titled ongoing series. Cool cover…with her holding a copy of BATMAN #50! “The wedding night’s barely over, but Catwoman’s back on the streets, this time to expose a copycat who’s pulling heists around Gotham City. As Selina cracks the whip on her former criminal cohorts, she’s attracting unwanted attention from one of Gotham’s most dangerous groups. The mob? Nope. Try the GCPD. And as if the Bat-Bride didn’t have enough problems, don’t miss the debut of an all-new villain determined to make trouble for all nine of Selina’s lives. Don’t miss the start of an all-new monthly series written and illustrated by Eisner Award-nominee JoĆ«lle Jones.” Buy It Now Related shopping tags: BATMAN FAMILY TITLES

First Impression: FUTURAMA ANNUAL [2018] #1

by Glenn Snow | May 13th, 2018

Good news everyone… “Futurama is back. And with a double issue/double feature. First, the Planet Express crew heads to a desert planet world to take part in a decadent partying event called Burning Mom, where a giant wicker statue of Mom will be burned in effigy. But the event sponsor, Mom herself, has plans to use the proceedings to even the score and rid the world of the revolting revelers. Then, while helping Leela with some volunteer work at the Orphanarium, Fry tells the children the bedtime tale of Bendocchio, the little robot who wishes to be a real meatbag. And with a little help from the Bluetooth Fairy and the keeper of his conscience, Jiminy Circuits, he may very […]
