Spiral Comics December 2018 Newsletter

by Glenn Snow | December 17th, 2018

WELCOME Hello, comic fans! Perusing the latest Previews catalog is the highlight of my month because there’s always so many cool, new comic series sprouting up. I’m always touting Marvel and DC stuff (and I’m really intrigued with DC’s new WONDER TWINS offering), but there’s a couple obscure series from Silver Sprocket that look really good. How does MAGICAL BEATDOWN sound to you? Or EMOTIONAL DATA? Or how about the manga URUSEI YATSURA from Viz and the creator of Inu Yasha? If you want to stick a little more to the mainstream, then check out the stuff from Marvel’s continued 80th Anniversary celebration. There’s some really cool-looking one-shots and one called ZIGGY PIG – SILLY SEAL COMICS, which sounds silly […]

BATTLESTAR GALACTICA: TWILIGHT COMMAND [2019] #1

Here’s a new (presumably mini-) series from Dynamite set in the chronology of the 2009 re-imagined Battlestar Galactica universe. Still going… “It’s a dangerous time for the last remaining humans. Captured by the Cylons on New Caprica, the colonists live in fear of what every new day will bring. As the Cylons press their oppressive-and life-threatening agenda-the survivors grow more desperate to reclaim their freedom. But there’s hope. Out in the wilds of New Caprica, beyond the Cylon boundaries, is a band of human freedom fighters. They answer to no one. They fear no Cylons. They are Twilight Command–and they have a plan. From writer Michael Moreci (Wasted Space, Archie Meets Batman ’66) and artist Breno Tamura (Batgirl and the […]

OLD MAN QUILL [2019] #1

Star-Lord gets the ‘Old Man’ treatment next in this maxi-series from Marvel. It’s always interesting to see how heroes and anti-heroes end up decades past their prime. I hope this ‘Old Person’ theme continues with lots of other characters. “THE FAR-FLUNG SAGA OF THE ONCE AND FUTURE STAR-LORD BEGINS. Meet Peter Quill. He used to be Star-Lord – you know, the legendary outlaw – but it’s been quite some time since he’s gone by that name. Taking over for his father as the Emperor of Spartax, Quill put the life of spacefaring adventure behind him for one of leadership and responsibility. Quill grew up. But things didn’t go as planned. Decades have passed, and Peter is haunted by tragedy. Down […]

BATMAN [2016] #64

This issue of BATMAN kicks off a 4-issue tie-in event to HEROES IN CRISIS that crosses over between BATMAN and FLASH where they’re not working together amicably. Looks pretty sweet! “‘THE LAST COLD CASE’ part one. The two greatest detectives in the DC Universe take on the one cold case that will tear them apart. As chief architect of the Sanctuary program that cost so much for so many, especially Wally West, Batman will be held accountable…by the Flash. A cold case from the Justice League’s past has mysteriously re-opened, and Batman and the Flash-the only two heroes who stand a chance of cracking the case-are at each other’s throats. Our heroes must combat a demon from the past while […]

RED SONJA [2019] #1

Dynamite launches another Red Sonja series from writer Mark Russell…who was deservedly nominated for an Eisner this year for best writer. He’s done stuff on religion and Hanna-Barbera stuff for DC, so…Red Sonja’s next up. Actually, the story seems pretty solid, and if the art is decent, it’ll be a strong addition to the genre. “No man knows the place of her birth, nor where she learned to wield a sword to shame many a male. They know only that she is called The She-Devil of The Hyrkanian Steppes. That, and RED SONJA. MARK RUSSELL (The Flintstones) and MIRKO COLAK (Conan) bring a savage tale of metal and blood. A world conqueror possesses a massive army and a fatal prophecy. […]

SUPER SONS [2019-SC] BOOK ONE: THE POLARSHIELD PROJECT

New York Times best-selling author Ridley Pearson kicks off DC’s new DC ZOOM imprint with this tale of the Super Sons! DC ZOOM targets readers 8-12…so, it’s perfect for your elementary school age child! “The polar ice caps have nearly melted away, causing devastation to coastal cities. Erratic, deadly weather forces everyone inland, tearing families apart. Earth is facing its greatest crisis-and Superman and Batman are nowhere to be found. Jon Kent and Damian Wayne are opposite in every way except one-they are the sons of the World’s Greatest Heroes. To uncover a global conspiracy, this unlikely dynamic duo will need to learn to trust each other and work together to save the Earth. But who is the mysterious Candace? […]

UNCANNY X-MEN: WINTER'S END [2019] #1

Wow, this is an excellent-looking one-shot X-MEN issue. I love these kinds of stories where a future version of someone comes back in time to tell himself how to maximize his life or the world for the better. The young never listen (can’t change the past theme) or something is amiss (stay true to yourself in the present theme). Oh, great an old version of myself just showed up and told me to clean the screen on my septic tank before it backs up. Sounds legit. “Iceman and the X-Men get a special visitor from the future. An older Bobby Drake has come to the present to tell him to give up being a super hero. But what could have […]

SAVAGE SWORD OF CONAN [2019] #1

Marvel’s Conan relaunch continues with a new SAVAGE SWORD OF CONAN series. The original magazine is a classic. It jumped around in chronology and tended to tell stories from Conan’s older years. This new comic series is most likely comprised of discontinuous arcs as well. We’ll see! “THE ANCIENT CULT OF KOGA THUN. A MYSTICAL TREASURE. AND THE ONLY MAN WHO CAN SAVE THE HYBORIAN AGE. Adrift at sea. No food. No weapons. Death surely awaits him. But the lionhearted CONAN is not so easily subdued, by Crom. When Conan finds himself captured, he unleashes his might on an unsuspecting pirate crew…one whose dark secrets will plunge Conan on the trail of an ancient treasure that may prove to be […]

New York Times best-selling author Danielle Paige launches DC’s new DC INK imprint with this original graphic novel starring Mera of the Aquaman family. DC INK targets readers 13 and up…perfect for your kids! “Princess Mera is teenage royalty and heir to the throne of Xebel, a colony ruled by the other no-so-lost land under the sea, Atlantis. Her father, his court, and the entire kingdom are expecting her to marry and introduce a new king. But Mera is destined to wear a different crown….
