BATMAN: DAMNED [2018] #1

Exciting! DC launches an imprint for premier talent to tell edgy stories about iconic characters outside DC Universe continuity. This should be good! “DC BLACK LABEL, the highly anticipated new imprint from DC Comics, starts here. The Joker is dead. There is no doubt about that. But whether Batman finally snapped his scrawny neck or some other sinister force in Gotham City did the deed is still a mystery. Problem is, Batman can’t remember… and the more he digs into this labyrinthine case, the more his mind starts to doubt everything he’s uncovering. So who better to set him straight than… John Constantine? Problem with that is as much as John loves a good mystery, he loves messing with people’s […]

MAN-EATERS [2018] #1

(Oh-oh, here she comes) Watch out, boy, she’ll chew you up. (Oh-oh, here she comes) She’s a man-eater. Can’t get the Hall and Oats song out of my head for this one. Very, very intriguing. “Eisner-nominated and New York Times bestselling thriller writer CHELSEA CAIN returns to comics with a new ONGOING SERIES. A mutation in Toxoplasmosis causes menstruating women to turn into ferocious killer wildcats-easily provoked and extremely dangerous. As panic spreads and paranoia takes root, the fate of the world rides on the shoulders of one twelve-year-old girl. Part Cat People, part The Handmaid’s Tale, MAN-EATERS will have everyone talking. From the creative team behind the Eisner-nominated series Mockingbird: writer CHELSEA CAIN, artist KATE NIEMCZYK, colorist RACHELLE ROSENBERG, […]

WRONG EARTH [2018] #1

This new series from new publisher, Ahoy Comics, could be pretty good. “AHOY Comics launches with a biting superhero satire. On one world, Dragonflyman and his sidekick Stinger enjoy a life of adventure. On another Earth, the Dragonfly hunts criminal parasites like a lethal exterminator. But what happens when these two heroes change places? By Tom Peyer (Captain Kid, Hourman) and Jamal Igle (Black, Supergirl). And, a ‘Golden Age’ Stinger solo story, by Paul Constant and Frank Cammuso. Plus: An all-new text story by comics legend Grant Morrison: ”Hud’ Hornet’s Holiday In Hell,’ illustrated by Rob Steen. All this plus a cartoon by Shannon Wheeler.” Buy It Now

ASGARDIANS OF THE GALAXY [2018] #1

There’s more than a few interesting characters in this team book. “Spinning out of the events of INFINITY WARS comes an epic space opera from DEADPOOL veterans Cullen Bunn and Matteo Lolli. Angela, the not-so-beloved half-sister of Thor. The hotheaded Valkyrie – and the human who shares her form, Annabelle Riggs. Skurge the Executioner, freshly returned from Hel. Throg, the mightiest frog of thunder. Kevin Masterson, the boy who took his father’s mace to become the hero Thunderstrike. And the Destroyer, the Asgardian armor built to take down Celestials – its wielder unknown. The events of INFINITY WARS set NEBULA off on a quest to rule the galaxy – wielding an Asgardian weapon even Thor would fear – and it’s […]

DICK TRACY: DEAD OR ALIVE [2018] #1

Dick Tracy pre-dates my boyhood immersion in comic books, so I’m very interested to see what this character looks like ‘reimagined for the 21st century through a retro lens.’ “IDW Publishing proudly presents the rebirth of one the most iconic comic-strip heroes of all time, Dick Tracy. The All-American detective just made the biggest collar of his career, and it only cost him his job. But now the honest cop has packed his bags for ‘the city by the lake,’ and its criminals better watch out. Reimagined for the 21st century through a retro lens by the superstar team of Michael Allred, Lee Allred, Rich Tommaso and Laura Allred, Dick Tracy: Dead or Alive is a lock to be the […]

HEROES IN CRISIS [2018] #1

Superheroes need therapists too. But they don’t need to be killed while they’re at a super-cool, Kryptonian-technology, Trekkish-holodeck-like treatment facility. That’s not cool. “There’s a new kind of crisis threatening the heroes of the DC Universe, ripped from real-world headlines by C.I.A.-operative-turned-comics-writer Tom King: How does a superhero handle PTSD? Welcome to Sanctuary, an ultra-secret hospital for superheroes who’ve been traumatized by crime-fighting and cosmic combat. But something goes inexplicably wrong when many patients wind up dead, with two well-known operators as the prime suspects: Harley Quinn and Booster Gold. It’s up to the DC Trinity of Superman, Wonder Woman and Batman to investigate-but can they get the job done in the face of overwhelming opposition?” Buy It Now

BULLY WARS [2018] #1

This new ongoing series from Image could be entertaining, especially if you’re a fan of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid franchise. Same kind of humor. “I HATE FAIRYLAND and Deadpool writer SKOTTIE YOUNG and artist AARON CONLEY (Sabertooth Swordsman, Rocket Raccoon and Groot) team up for a hilarious all-new, all-ages ONGOING SERIES. Rufus, the biggest bully in Rottenville since kindergarten, suddenly goes from bully to bullied on the first day of high school. He’s forced to make a shaky pact with his favorite geeks: Spencer and his twin sibling besties, Edith and Ernie. Together they’ll have to find a way to survive the Hunger Games-like contest known simply as the BULLY WARS-where the winner will rule the school.” Buy […]

FRIENDO [2018] #1

Yet another excellent-looking offering from Vault Comics! Check it out! “Leo wasn’t allowed toys as a kid, but now that he’s all grown up he’s going to take yours. He used to play by the rules, but then governments and corporations set fire to the rules and still expected him to behave. He probably would have if it hadn’t been for his new friend Jerry. See, Jerry isn’t human; he’s a personalised marketing VR… and he’s malfunctioning. Unhinged ultraviolence from Alex Paknadel (Arcadia) and Martin Simmonds (Punks Not Dead).” Buy It Now
