First Impression: INFAMOUS IRON MAN #1

by Glenn Snow | August 5th, 2016

“There is a new Iron Man in town, and his name is VICTOR VON DOOM. The greatest villain of the Marvel Universe will try something new. Where Tony Stark failed, Doom will succeed. What is Doom’s Master Plan?” I was a big fan of SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN, where Doc Octopus took over Peter Parker’s body and masqueraded as Spider-Man for a couple of real calendar years to great entertainment value. INFAMOUS IRON MAN appears to be a similar spin on that concept with Doom becoming Iron Man. It won’t be quite the same premise as Superior Spider-Man if another Tony Stark and/or Iron Man is inhabiting the same continuity and people know it, so we’ll have to see how this one plays […]

First Impression: GREAT LAKES AVENGERS #1

Now Great Lakes: Avengers #1 Comic Book Cover

This one is guaranteed to be mostly self-deprecating, but probably also a fourth-wall breaking, dark, satirical comedy. Fans of the Deadpool film will likely also enjoy this comic. Michael Allred’s variant cover captures the essence of this series perfectly. “All New, All Different?” No, thank you! New things are bad and different things are scary! Instead, why not join everybody’s least favorite super-hero team, the Great Lakes Avengers in their brand new–but not too brand new–ongoing series, Same Old, Same Old, Great Lakes Avengers! When the team gets reinstated as permanent members of the Avengers and uprooted to Detroit, the GLA has one more shot at super hero glory… but can they answer the call? Do they even have 4G […]

Doom Patrol #1 Comic Cover

If you hadn’t noticed, DC took a weird spin on the line of Hanna-Barbera cartoon properties that they recently introduced. Now, DC is introducing a line of books tagged DC’s Young Animal (DCYA), and it’s equally difficult to describe. There’s not a whole lot of information, but it appears they’re extracting some of the oddballs from the DC Universe and “zapping them with invigorating life.” These comics are a “place for wild ideas” and “an alternative to what is largely happening in mainstream comics and the media.” First up is DOOM PATROL #1. Here’s the full description of this comic book. Tell us you think? The atoms are buzzing. The daydreams crowd sentient streets, and the creative team has been […]

Is Sony Drafting A Silver Sable Script?

by Glenn Snow | June 27th, 2016
Silver Sable #1 Comic Cover

Sony, the keeper of the Spider-Man movie license from Marvel, may be drafting a Silver Sable script. “Who,” you say? Silver Sable is a fairly obscure Spider-Man character. She was introduced in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN [1963] #265 in Jun 1985, has had only sporadic guest appearances since then, but starred in her own series, SILVER SABLE AND THE WILD PACK [1992] for 35 issues from 1992-95. (You may remember the #1 issue of that series with the silver embossed cardstock cover from the depths of the 90’s gimmick cover craze. Today it’s a variant cover glut. Back then it was embossed, holofoil, hologram, and die-cut covers galore.) As an antihero mercenary, she was cast opposite Spider-Man in moral juxtaposition, similar to […]

Archangel #1 Comic Cover

The science fiction author, William Gibson, effectively coined the term “cyberspace” in his 80’s cyberpunk writings, a genre he is largely credited with creating. The prescient author is writing a new comic series, Archangel, with artist Butch Guice, from IDW Entertainment. About American politicians leaving the planet to create a new reality they can equally control…and corrupt. If this sounds interesting to you, let us know!

Weapon X Appears in X-Men: Apocalypse

by Glenn Snow | June 19th, 2016
Wolverine Weapon X #1 Variant Cover

There was an awesome Wolverine scene in X-Men: Apocalypse, where we get to see his escape from the Weapon X program in that iconic test gear. This outfit was introduced in Barry Windsor-Smith’s run of Marvel Comics Presents #72-84 from 1991 which finally told the story of Logan’s time in the Weapon X program. (Weapon X was the code name for Wolverine from his very first appearance way back in Hulk #181.) In 2002, Grant Morrison would expound further on the Weapon X program in his run on New X-Men #142-145, revealing the X was actually the Roman numeral ten, with nine previous experiments before Wolverine. (Weapon I was rumored to be the super soldier serum that produced Captain America.) […]

First Impression: LABYRINTH 30TH ANNIVERSARY SPECIAL

Jim Henson's Labyrinth Special Comic Cover

Wait…what? It’s been 30 years since Jim Henson’s Labyrinth movie came out? Although it was considered a commercial failure at the time, it’s accumulated a fair cult following since. If you need more stories from that fantastic world, JIM HENSON’S LABYRINTH 30TH ANNIVERSARY SPECIAL #1 collects all the previously published Free Comic Book Day stories with a couple new tales. You’ll find short stories based on some of the ancillary characters of the world: Sir Didymus, Ludo, Ambrosius, Hoggle, some of the iconic figures that Sarah came across in her journey through the labyrinth. This comic book is offered in this month’s Previews catalog.

First Impression: SUPERGIRL: REBIRTH #1 and SUPERWOMAN #1

Supergirl Rebirth #1 Comic Cover

DC Universe continues its Rebirth this month with a handful of #1’s offered in the Previews catalog. The SUPERGIRL: REBIRTH #1 description mentions the DEO, so it looks to be borrowing from the popular TV series incarnation. SUPERWOMAN #1 reveals a Lois Lane with the powers of Superman. This kind of gender role reversal is proving popular, so something tells me this trend of giving the female lead the male superhero’s powers won’t stop until they’ve all been done.

First Impression: ALL-STAR BATMAN #1

All Star Batman #1 Comic Cover

Scott Snyder’s New 52 Batman from 2011 is some of the best Batman in existence. So, his ALL-STAR BATMAN #1 is a solid recommendation. The Court of Owls and their tie to Gotham’s and the Wayne’s past was riveting. This time around, Snyder looks to be exploring Batman’s rogues gallery. ALL-STAR BATMAN #1 is offered in this month’s Previews catalog.

First Impression: DARTH VADER #24-25

Darth Vader Comic Cover

I’m saddened to see the Darth Vader series ending with DARTH VADER #24 and #25, both offered in this month’s Marvel Previews catalog. I expect the finale will be spectacular, as this series has been top-notch, exploring how Vader regained the Emperor’s trust after the destruction of the first Death Star. If only he had recovered those stolen battlestation plans before they got into the Alliance’s hands. Now that he knows his position is precarious, I can only hope there will be more of Vader’s own secret machinations in Marvel’s future.
