WELCOME
Hello, comic fans! The latest DC Previews explains their new age-based branding system, and they go all in with it on the offerings this month. It wasn’t as clear last month, especially since the Black Label had a short, earlier start as an actual imprint, not just as an age-based branding now. I think this stuff matters, and it should make sense…and publishers should stick with whatever they come up with. Fans are not particularly picky about these kinds of categorizations, beyond a general dislike of rapid-fire change-after-change. Dissolving Vertigo is a big move, and it will not fade from comic book history or memory any time soon. I dare say, it’s so entrenched, it’ll probably be back. On another note, the days of overprinting seem to have waned and may actually be over. Subsequent printings with a recolored/new cover seem to be the thing now, with hot books getting reprints up into the 6th printing. Marvel doesn’t hesitate to send anything back to print, and now regularly has a dozen or more reprints per week. You can check out our Limited Time Offerings for Pre-Order page each weekend to see this stuff. Unfortunately, many cover previews are not available for these items. Well, Marvel has never been particularly good about cover previews anyway. Finally, Diamond caved in like a paper cup and canceled Ablaze Comics’ Cimmerian comic series. Ablaze intentionally avoided using the name Conan for its series, even though it’s a retelling of one of Conan’s earliest stories, which is plainly (to me at least) in the public domain. Marvel publishes several Conan series, and issued a Cease and Desist order to Ablaze. I don’t know what Ablaze’s response was, but Diamond extirpated all evidence of the series from their database. The big intellectual property companies, especially Disney, have been working the copyright system for decades now, protecting their intellectual property waaaaaay past any intended copyright sunset dates. Science fiction has been covertly warning us of dystopian futures replete with near omnipotent corporations for generations. But, hey, tons of new and cool comic series are debuting this month! As always, let us know if we can search our stacks for something…we try to cater to regular, normal newbies…crazy, intense collectors…and everyone in between (except for the Skesis…guardians of the crystal, my butt). –Glenn

FIRST IMPRESSIONS FOR SEPTEMBER 2019
X-FORCE [2020] #1
This is an interesting take on X-Force–it’s the traditional mission, but it’s got several traditional X-Men members, like Beast, Jean Grey and Wolverine!
“THE HIGH PRICE OF A NEW DAWN. X-Force is the CIA of the mutant world-one half intelligence branch, one half special ops. Beast, Jean Grey and Sage on one side, Wolverine, Kid Omega and Domino on the other. In a perfect world, there would be no need for an X-Force. We’re not there…yet.”
MACHINE GIRL #1
Oh, this one looks pretty cool!
“In a galaxy far, far away… There is a planet full of exotic interplanetary people. All of them living together in a dangerous multicultural world. And right there in the middle there is Megan. A young human girl fighting her way up on the deadly arena of the Intergalactic Mixed Battling Arts as she searches for her origins and other beings like her while she is obsessed with a mysterious, long forgotten planet: Earth.”
DEADPOOL [2020] #1
Multiple Eisner-nominated writer Kelly Thompson relaunches the Merc with a Mouth! Should be good!
“Deadpool’s newest mercenary job has him going after the King of Monsters, who has claimed a new kingdom for his monstrous subjects…on Staten Island. But you know what they say, when you come at the king, you better not miss. The Merc with a Mouth finds himself neck deep in political intrigue, monster law, and a monster hunter out for blood. It’s like The Crown but with even more swords and monsters. Can Deadpool’s smooth charisma and deft diplomacy allow him to keep his head, or will he be royally screwed?”
