First Impression: BATTLESTAR GALACTICA: GODS AND MONSTERS #1

battlestar galactica gods monsters 1

Dynamite launched an all-new *classic* Battlestar series and now issues an all-new series based in the reimagined Battlestar universe–you know, that awesome 2004 television universe. With a focus on Baltar, GODS AND MONSTERS is bound to be interesting. You know what would rock, though? I’d love to see Dynamite go back to some point in the reimagined series, split away from the television series events, and strike out on a different timeline with all-new events and a different ending in mind. Oh! Instead of at #1, they could start the numbering of this series with something like #34 (or whatever episode number would mark the diversion) and make it seem like we’re joining the series in progress. Or they could […]

First Impression: FOOLKILLER #1

by Glenn Snow | September 23rd, 2016

I don’t know too much about Foolkiller. I know there’s been a few incarnations, but not much material as a whole. This take has vibes of a Deadpool meets Suicide Squad mashup. “Greg Salinger was just your typical merc for hire–FOOLKILLER–killing those that he deemed to be ‘foolish.’ And for money. But that life is behind him now. Today, he’s a psychiatrist, trying to help others. But now S.H.I.E.L.D. wants him to try to rehabilitate super villains. The catch? If these ‘patients’ don’t make enough progress, they’re dead!”

Terry Moore is a proven comic creator and has just come off a favorably reviewed 42-issue run of his self-published series, RACHEL RISING [2011]. His series ECHO [2008] was before that, and the Eisner Award-winning series, STRANGERS IN PARADISE [1993] before that. This newest series is a very good bet, even without its interesting premise. “When Samantha’s junkyard is visited by a UFO looking for spare parts, she is only too happy to oblige. But when word gets out she is a reliable source, Sam’s booming alien business catches the attention of an Area 51 investigator determined to shut her down! Don’t miss the premier issue of Terry Moore’s fantastic new series!”

First Impression: OCCUPY AVENGERS #1

by Glenn Snow | September 23rd, 2016

Hawkeye has somewhat departed from the traditional superhero sphere in the modern Marvel Universe. Matt Fraction’s 2012 series, HAWKEYE [2012], was truly great mostly because it focused on what Clint did when he wasn’t an Avenger. The 2015 relaunch, ALL-NEW HAWKEYE [2015], tried to reproduce the magic with an exploration of his childhood. By apparently aligning itself with the Occupy Movement, I’m not sure where this series is going, so I’m skeptical. “Super heroes–they’re a privileged class. Doing what they want, when they want and suffering no consequences. They have no regard for the ordinary people who are left behind to suffer in their wake. Who will stand up for the little guy? There is a man. If you can […]

First Impression: FRONTIER #1

by Glenn Snow | September 23rd, 2016

This one looks interesting. Jonathan Hickman writes and draws a new science fiction series. The planets have aligned, and the prodigal son has returned! For the first time in eight years, JONATHAN HICKMAN (EAST OF WEST, BLACK MONDAY MURDERS, Secret Wars, Avengers) is both writing and drawing a new comic series: FRONTIER. It’s like Star Trek, but super depressing. Seriously. Not a joke. The final frontier…is a total bummer. Each issue contains galaxy-expanding bonus content like star maps, breakdowns of alien races, interstellar factions, and detailed spaceship schematics. FRONTIER is a brand new science fiction story about utopia lost, and how we might just gain it back.

Hmmm. A new ongoing Thanos series. But it doesn’t mention anything about any Infinity whatsits. So, what’s the point?

First Impression: M.A.S.K.: MOBILE ARMORED STRIKE KOMMAND #1

by Glenn Snow | September 23rd, 2016

IDW’s REVOLUTION cross-over event created a Hasbro shared universe. This new ongoing series is a modern extension of the original toy line from 1985 that spawned a franchise of toys, cartoons, video games and comics. It could be cool. It could be a dud. “Launching from the events of REVOLUTION! The M.A.S.K. team streaks into a dangerous, unstable landscape of dark wars, high intrigue and non-stop action where they’ll encounter the nearly unstoppable threat of Miles Mayhem and his black ops squadron known as V.E.N.O.M.  How will an untested Matt Trakker lead M.A.S.K. through a complex new world order where nothing is what it seems? Join writer Brandon Easton (Marvel’s Agent Carter), artist Tony Vargas (Rot and Ruin) and cover […]

First Impression: INVINCIBLE IRON MAN #1

by Glenn Snow | September 23rd, 2016

The Iron Man mantle is the latest to get the ‘ole gender switcheroo, as Riri Williams, the MIT student who reverse engineered Stark’s armor and built a suit of her own, steps into Iron Man’s boots. Hijinks, I’m sure, will ensue. There’s been a bunch of fanfare surrounding this character. We’ll see if this “IRONHEART” can capture our own hearts. “From the violent streets of Chicago, a new armored hero rises! Clad in her very own Iron Man armor, Riri Williams is ready to show the Marvel Universe what she can do as the self-made hero of tomorrow. But is she ready for all the problems that come with stepping into Iron Man’s jet boots? Where’s a genius billionaire playboy […]

First Impression: OPTIMUS PRIME #1

by Glenn Snow | September 18th, 2016

I’ve got a real soft spot in my heart for the classic Transformers cartoon. The Transformer’s universe of today, however, has gotten so big and confusing, I’d have no idea how to get into any of IDW’s comic series. This one doesn’t appear to carry too much baggage. A clean start with a single focus on a classic character. “REVOLUTION is over-but the danger to Earth is just beginning. As OPTIMUS PRIME pulls Earth into the larger universe, he’s painted a target on Earth…and a new alien incursion begins when a corkscrew shaped craft drills into our world! The next evolution of TRANSFORMERS is here! OPTIMUS PRIME’s past on CYBERTRON haunts his present on Earth! Amazing artist Kei Zama (Scarlett […]

First Impression: AVENGERS #1

by Glenn Snow | September 18th, 2016

“Marvel NOW” is in full swing again this month with a whole host of new #1’s, including a new relaunch of AVENGERS. This is a perfect time to jump on. The line-up looks like: Captain America (Sam Wilson), Thor (Jane Foster), Vision, Wasp, Spider-Man (Peter Parker), and Hercules. The hook this relaunch appears to be overcoming dissention and distrust (following the events of Civil War II) among its roster in the face of evils that threaten the entire world. No problem. The tagline “KANG WAR ONE” implies we’ll see that time-travelling genius who may or may not still be splintered into various alternate versions of himself. I think there’s a cream for that. “The time has come! Their ranks shattered […]
