FURTHER ADVENTURES OF NICK WILSON [2018] #1

This new mini-series from Image gets praise from Patton Oswalt. So, yeah, it’ll be funny. “From Eisner and Emmy-winning writers. For a few years in his early 20s, Nick Wilson had super powers and all the acclaim associated with them. When those powers vanished, so did his fame, sending him from national hero to late-night punchline. By the time we pick up his story, he is not yet 30 and barely an answer in a trivia contest. Faced with a life in a rear-view mirror full of lost powers, faded glory, former enemies, ex-girlfriends, and forgotten grudges, Nick struggles to figure out who he is today. MOTHERLANDS [2018] #1

Here’s a super-cool sounding new Vertigo mini-series. I’m definitely intrigued by the ‘world.’ I’m less excited about the actual drama described in the solicitation text, but I realize there would be no ‘world’ to showcase without some kind of actual story to tell in it. That’s the trick. That’s the magic. “In a crazed future where unhinged technologies and interconnected parallel Earths have given rise to a spectacular class of super-criminal, the most beloved celebrities aren’t actors or rock stars, but the bounty hunters who traverse an exotic multiverse in search of impossible prey. But when the spotlight-shunning, strait-laced tracer known as Tab finds herself in an ultra-violent race for her greatest prize yet, she’s forced to work with her […]

SIDEWAYS [2018] #1 Comic Book Cover

This is one of the most promising of DC’s ‘New Age of DC Heroes’ initiative. A high school junior has an accident during the DARK NIGHTS: METAL storyline and gets superpowers. There’s a real ‘spider-man’ vibe with the age of the hero and the ‘with that much power comes great liability’ tagline DC threw into the solicitation text. That’s ok with me. I love Spider-Man. Marvel never really cracked the code on how to get lightning to strike twice with the concept. Speedball. Darkhawk. Sorry, no plans for them in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But I get a real good feeling from SIDEWAYS, simply because it is tied to a strong storyline and doesn’t feel like it was created in […]
