SPIRITUS #1 - VAULT COMICS

Sweet automaton, another great-sounding series from Vault Comics. A champion fighter’s consciousness is diverted from incarceration to an uninhibited labor robot. Head busting sure to ensue. “A champion fighter convicted of murder, Kinju Dayal faces automated confinement: The transfer of her consciousness into a state programmed labor machine. But a ruthless underworld boss diverts Kinju into a vessel unshackled from its rigid programming. Only Federal Marshal Rueben Reveles stands between the armored warrior and sanctuary.”

DC COMICS, DARK NIGHTS: METAL #1

Scott Snyder has done an amazing job with Batman ever since the New 52 relaunch. I can’t wait to see what the “Dark Multiverse” is all about! “The superstar BATMAN team of writer Scott Snyder and artist Greg Capullo reunite for a massive, universe-spanning event. DARK NIGHTS: THE FORGE and THE CASTING hinted at dark corners of reality that have never been seen till now. Now, as DARK DAYS: METAL begins, the Dark Multiverse is revealed in all its devastating danger-and the threats it contains are coming for the DC Universe. DARK DAYS: METAL is a DC event unlike any other-one that will push Batman, Superman and heroes of the Justice League beyond their limits to take on threats unlike […]

First Impression: SECRET WARRIORS [2017] #1

by Glenn Snow | March 23rd, 2017

If you’re enjoying the television series, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., you’ll probably like this new series…Secret Warriors…starring Daisy Johnson, aka Quake. The Daisy Johnson comic book character predates the television character by nearly a decade. In fact, the first season television character had very few similarities with the comic book character, and few would have guessed at the time they were the same character. But as more details were uncovered about the television character, several aspects of her history began to converge with the comic book character. The likeness was not perfect, but there was significant overlap. Now, aspects of the comic book character have been converging with the television character, including a redesign so she looks more like Chloe […]

First Impression: SECRET EMPIRE #1

by Glenn Snow | February 17th, 2017

The Marvel Previews magazine gives you no idea what this new “classified” series from Marvel is about…because the description is, well, “classified.”  But Marvel has subsequently released the description below with these images. Have they taken this whole evil Captain America thing too far? It was a shock to learn that Cap was a Hydra sleeper agent, but I thought they were extricating themselves from it with the old “he was just brainwashed” trick. This series seems to be going in the other direction. Will you read it? ” What if your greatest ally was secretly your greatest enemy? What if the most trustworthy, stalwart hero history has ever known has been planning in secret a massive betrayal? That time […]

First Impression: BEN REILLY: THE SCARLET SPIDER #1

by Glenn Snow | February 15th, 2017

Peter Parker’s clone is back with his own ongoing series! Is there room in the Spider-Family for him? He’s been disavowed almost since he first appeared in 1975, but each time Marvel reboots its Universe, he seems to get a slightly surer foothold in mainstream continuity. The Spider-Verse has blown open the doors on alternate Spider-Men and -Women, but this one clone has had a tough time keeping traction. I’m interested to see where this series leads. “One of the most controversial characters in comics has returned – and the controversy has only BEGUN! In the aftermath of THE CLONE CONSPIRACY, Ben has a new take on life…and he’s not the same Scarlet Spider he was before. Come witness what […]

First Impression: WEAPON X [2017] #1

by Glenn Snow | February 14th, 2017

I’m always excited to read more about the Weapon X program. The promise of a new WEAPON X series (offered for pre-order in this month’s Preveiews Catalog) is the promise of more super killers from the same program that produced fan favorites such as Wolverine and Deadpool. How long the new players last against the originals is another matter. The role of the Weapon X program has expanded and deepened over time in the Marvel Universe. What began as the simple mention of Wolverine’s code name–Weapon X–in his first cameo appearance in THE INCREDIBLE HULK #180 from 1974 has blossomed into an program within a larger program (the Weapon Plus Program) that produced several other agents. We’ll see what this […]

First Impression: HEAD LOPPER #5

by Glenn Snow | January 25th, 2017

It’s back! The first four issues were a huge hit. There’s just something about this adventure comic that has such an attractive mix. The author wants it to have “long fights, dark jokes, creepy atmosphere, short plots and long plots, and comfortable conclusions that, hopefully, still leave you wanting more.” Seriously cool cover. “NEW STORY ARC! ‘IN THE SHADOW OF THE TOWER’ Norgal and Agatha are back! A daring new adventure awaits, looming like the Crimson Tower, home of Ulrich the Twice Damned, sworn enemy of Zhaania Kota Ka. With old friends and new, our heroes boldly enter the bloodied pinnacle with bare steel and steady hearts. The quarterly series HEAD LOPPER has returned!”

First Impression: EXTREMITY #1

by Glenn Snow | January 23rd, 2017

The heavily manga-influenced art caught my eye on this one. The description mentions “…the beauty and imagination of Studio Ghibli meet the intensity of Mad Max…” That kind of description immediately evokes images of Akira in my mind, one of my all-time favorites. So, I should give this one from Kirkman’s Skybound studio a chance. “SERIES PREMIERE! Thea dreams. Not of a better life, but of revenge on the clan that ruined her family. With ferocious battles between man, machines, and monsters ahead…who knows where her quest for vengeance will take her? Creator DANIEL WARREN JOHNSON (Space Mullet) and colorist MIKE SPICER present a bold new vision, where the beauty and imagination of Studio Ghibli meet the intensity of Mad […]

First Impression: X-O MANOWAR #1

by Glenn Snow | January 23rd, 2017

I think X-O Manowar has a superhero origin story as strong as any other first-tier hero from the big two companies.  Someday I’ll see it on the big screen. Until then, I’ll continue to enjoy the comics. You should check them out too! “Born under the oppressive thumb of the Roman Empire, Aric of Dacia learned warfare at an early age. It was amid such violence that he was abducted by an alien race. Forced into slavery, he survived where others perished. His escape would come from bonding with a weapon of immeasurable power: the X-O Manowar armor. With it, he returned to Earth…only to find himself stranded in the modern day. But that was a lifetime ago. Now, far […]

First Impression: X-MEN PRIME #1

by Glenn Snow | January 22nd, 2017

Following the war with the Inhumans, the X-Men will need a new status quo. This one-shot is a setup issue for whatever is coming next. Very excited to see Kitty Pryde leading a group of X-Men! This is a perfect jumping-on point for newbies! Check out Spiral Comics’ Get Started In X-Men page! “RESURRXION BEGINS HERE! In the wake of their war with the Inhumans, the X-MEN are at a crossroads. Where do they go from here? Luckily, one beloved X-Men has the answer to that question: Xavier’s dream comes full circle as KITTY PRYDE returns to the X-Men, ready to lead them in their mission to protect a world that hates and fears them. The next chapter of the […]
