Spiral Comics June 2018 Newsletter

by Glenn Snow | June 16th, 2018

WELCOME Hello, comic fans! As always, reports of the demise of the comic book industry were premature. Even more cool, new series are being offered for the first time this month–mainstream and alternative options galore. The Fantastic Four are back after a 2+ year hiatus with Dan Slott at the writing helm, fresh off an amazing finish with Amazing Spider-Man. Marvel says “because you demanded it…,” but I was always just politely suggesting it. Demanding one of your favorite comics back is just rude. As always, let us know if there is something we can track down for you…we try to cater to regular, normal newbies…crazy, intense collectors…and everyone in between (except Syndrome, because if everyone collects comics then no […]

Spiral Comics April 2018 Newsletter

IMMORTAL HULK [2018] #1

WELCOME Hello, comic fans! Both DC and Marvel are offering relaunches of major titles this month. DC has HAWKMAN, JUSTICE LEAGUE and the MAN OF STEEL. Brian Michael Bendis makes his big DC debut with MAN OF STEEL! The Teen Titans and Titans have specials as well this month, presumably before a relaunch next month. A massive shake-up will occur next month with the Previews Catalog itself. DC is moving out of the Previews Catalog into their own self-contained catalog, aptly called DC PREVIEWS. Marvel has been in their own catalog forever. I’ve never understood the attraction of separating from Previews, but there must be some intangible benefit. To fill the void in the premiere publishers section, Dynamite and Boom […]

First Impression: STAR WARS: LANDO--DOUBLE OR NOTHING [2018] #1

WELCOME Hello, comic fans! Well, I had hopes it would have legs, but it seems Marvel Legacy was short-lived, as they are giving several titles a ‘FRESH START’ this month. That means #1 issues from AVENGERS, BLACK PANTHER, and VENOM. Probably not a coicidence that these three have cinematic movies this year. Another exciting development is the Hunt for Wolverine expands into a multiple mini-series event. See our Spotlight Tag for more info on that. Elsewhere, Image had their big Expo meeting, and you can see what cool new series are coming from them, like Remender’s DEATH OR GLORY, Vaughn’s BARRIER, as well as a few other interesting offerings. Finally, there’s no dearth of new series from any publisher with […]

STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI--STORMS OF CRAIT [2018] #1

WELCOME Hello, again, from Spiral Comics. We are always excited each and every month to see what’s offered in the Previews catalog. While Marvel continues to revitalize its stable of titles with Marvel Legacy and DC pumps out hits like DARK NIGHTS: METAL and DOOMSDAY CLOCK, you should realize that hot comics that introduce new characters are still being published. If you though you missed out on the first appearance of everyone that will ever be important, think about the recent SPIDER-GWEN [2015B] #24, which is the first appearance of Gwenom. And consider TOTALLY AWESOME HULK [2016] #22, which is the first appearance of Weapon H. And over on the DC side, DARK NIGHTS: METAL has introduced a whole host […]

Preorder Savings

WELCOME Hello, again, from Spiral Comics. This month, we’re still excited about Marvel Legacy rolling on. Even more titles are reverting to their legacy numbering, but we also get a few one-shots: DARKHAWK #51, NOT BRAND ECHH #14, POWER PACK #63, MASTER OF KUNG FU #126, and SILVER SABLE AND THE WILD PACK #36. Before I read the fine print and realized these were just one-shots, I fully believed Marvel was launching new, ongoing series for these legacy titles. And that’s the exciting thing about Marvel Legacy. To be clear–I don’t think they’ll be doing this, but Marvel could offer five one-shots connecting to legacy titles every month for years and not run out of series for the stunt. That […]

JAWAS 2 T-shirt

WELCOME There are so many exciting new comics offered for preorder in this month’s Previews catalog, it’s hard to play favorites. But, Marvel Legacy is tops. I’ll admit I was skeptical…until I saw the catalog this month. I’m so hopeful for this latest “relaunch” mainly because the return to legacy numbering pays homage to us collectors who have been collecting for decades. We’ve known all along that a new #1 every other year is just a gimmick. And we want to feel the weight of all the continuity that’s come before, even if half of it is ignored half the time. The new, accommodating stories, as I read the descriptions, seem excellent as well. Hey, also, I can’t help but […]
