WELCOME Hello, comic fans! The summer is blazing away and comics continue to be hot as well. Tons of cool-looking brand new series being offered in this month’s catalog. Check it out…I won’t bother to list them all here. The summer convention calendar is in full swing as well. Hope your cosplay malfunctions are minimized and those $1 bins are full of hidden gems. As always, let us know if we can search our stacks for something…we try to cater to regular, normal newbies…crazy, intense collectors…and everyone in between (except for the Dark Phoenix when she’s in one of her universe-destroying moods). –Glenn P.S. Paper Girls #1 Comic Book Cover

WELCOME Hello, comic fans! Well, Marvel has hit a new low in my opinion in the variant cover bubble we are currently inhabiting. Now, they’re issuing 1-in-25 variants for second printings! So, follow me here…there’s a regular second printing of FRIENDLY NEIGHBORHOOD SPIDER-MAN [2019] #6 and WAR OF THE REALMS: AGENTS OF ATLAS #1, but also 1-in-25 variants of the second printings. This isn’t the very first time they’ve done this. As far as I can tell, last month’s IMMORTAL HULK #16 second printing also had a 1-in-25 variant and could be the first one. I thought it might be a fluke last month, but here we are with a couple more this month. I’ve been collecting comic books since […]

Chances are, even if you don’t collect/read comic books, you’ve heard of many of these characters before. Well, there’s a new #1 issue for […]

CAPTAIN MARVEL [2019] #1

WELCOME Hello, comic fans! The comic industry is still going strong with tons of new, great-looking stuff for eager fans like us. You can always check out the brand new series on our Brand New Series page. Captain Marvel will be out before our next newsletter, and I’m really excited about this latest chapter of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). If you didn’t catch it, Peter David had an awesome reply to Bill Maher’s insults to comic fans. I really appreciate PD’s view of comic characters as modern-day myths-in-the-making. And finally, super mad props go out to DC for including nearly every one of their variant covers in the latest pre-order catalog. Cover art is a large part of the […]

Spiral Comics December 2018 Newsletter

by Glenn Snow | December 17th, 2018

WELCOME Hello, comic fans! Perusing the latest Previews catalog is the highlight of my month because there’s always so many cool, new comic series sprouting up. I’m always touting Marvel and DC stuff (and I’m really intrigued with DC’s new WONDER TWINS offering), but there’s a couple obscure series from Silver Sprocket that look really good. How does MAGICAL BEATDOWN sound to you? Or EMOTIONAL DATA? Or how about the manga URUSEI YATSURA from Viz and the creator of Inu Yasha? If you want to stick a little more to the mainstream, then check out the stuff from Marvel’s continued 80th Anniversary celebration. There’s some really cool-looking one-shots and one called ZIGGY PIG – SILLY SEAL COMICS, which sounds silly […]

Get Started In Wolverine

WELCOME Hello, comic fans! There are so many great, new series launching out of the November pre-order catalog, my head almost exploded. In fact, Marvel alone has–by my count–14 new #1’s this month. Some are pretty cool-looking one-shots celebrating their 80th Anniversary next year, but there are big-name series launching too: CONAN THE BARBARIAN, GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, CAPTAIN MARVEL, BLACK WIDOW, CHAMPIONS, MARVEL COMICS PRESENTS and FRIENDLY NEIGHBORHOOD SPIDER-MAN. I’m calling it the “Unbranded 2019 Explosion” (trademark pending). Not to be completely outdone, DC has their new Bendis-curated imprint, Wonder Comics, launching with their first two titles: YOUNG JUSTICE and NAOMI. Need more new stuff? Boom! Studios is launching a new BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER series, and Dark Horse […]

MILES MORALES: SPIDER-MAN [2019] #1

WELCOME Hello, comic fans! Last month I was excited to see where Netflix’s Iron Fist season 3 would go. Well, it’s unexpectedly canceled, so I will get no more martial arts mayhem from that show. But Daredevil season 3 is on deck for the end of this month, so I’ll be busy binging that when it comes out! In other news, IDW has launched a line of Marvel comics targeted at the all-ages niche that they’re so good at. I think it’s interesting and wise that Marvel is outsourcing these projects and concentrating on what they do best. Not a month goes by without something new and cool to look forward to in comics. Here’s a short list of some […]

Captain America Comic Book Cover

WELCOME Hello, comic fans! I just finished season 2 of Netflix’s Iron Fist. How about that epilogue!?! I’m excited to see where next season goes. It looks like the writers are leaning heavily on Fraction and Brubaker’s IMMORTAL IRON FIST series from 2007, which expanded greatly on the Iron Fist mythos. Speaking of expanding on a mythos, Boom! Studios now has the license for Serenity (Firefly) comics, and their first series will explore Mal and Zoe’s time as Browncoats. Historic! Can’t wait! And again this month, there are tons of brand new series being offered, including, but not limited to: ALIEN 3 (an adaptation of William Gibson’s unproduced screenplay), DR. HORRIBLE, GREEN LANTERN, SHAZAM!, SPIDER-MAN (an all-ages series from IDW!), […]

Spiral Comics August 2018 Newsletter

by Glenn Snow | August 17th, 2018

WELCOME Hello, comic fans! Tons of brand new series are being offered again this month…from Marvel’s SPIDER-GEDDON event and their ongoing INFINITY WARS event…to classics like BATTLESTAR GALACTICA and LONE RANGER. Image has a host of new series as well. Speaking of which, have you checked out their ‘stealth’ title, DIE!DIE!DIE!? Image surprised retailers by sending them issues of this brand new ongoing series without offering it for pre-order. And they’re going to keep publishing it without advanced notice, so it’ll just show up. This is on the heels of what Marvel did with the X CLASSIFIED title as well, keeping that a secret right up till the month of publication. (It’s MR. AND MRS. X, a series about Gambit […]

Batman Damned #1

WELCOME Hello, comic fans! Sometimes, the summer months can be slow in comic. But not this month! Wow, there are a few exciting gems being offered this month. There’s a STRANGER THINGS mini-series that is *not* an adaptation and tells the story of how Will survived when he was trapped in the Upside Down. MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER 3000 is appearing in comics for the first time. DC launches their Black Label imprint with BATMAN: DAMNED. And finally, Wolverine’s back! There are tons of other new series worth mentioning as well, if I had the space here. (See our announcements for a new, easy way to see all the new series being offered each month.) As always, let us know if […]
